I would greatly appreciate pointers to resources that list alternatives to common software and software-adjacent services with the aim of removing dependencies on the USA and removing support of fascists and oligarchs.

Ideally the resources would be directed at the needs of scholarly/research/academic people. (Research and scholarship aren't open or reproducible if the software and data they depend on can be 'disappeared'.)

A useful reminder that negotiations with academic big #publishers, especially with so-called 'Next Generation OA' negotiations on the horizon, need to seek the removal of user #surveillance as a basic academic freedom. This seems even more necessary for any of this OA window dressing to at all correspond with BOAI20 aspirations.

#Stanford researchers have "launched" Open Radar Code Architecture, an #opensource tool to build affordable ice-penetrating radar systems to study ice sheets and monitor their impact on rising sea levels.

By releasing this work as open source, new generations of researchers can access and build ice-penetrating radars, spur further research, and get involved in ways not previously possible.

I'm based in #Mastodon but have a #Bluesky account to experiment & explore. #Musk's actions during the election triggered another mass migration away from #X / #Twitter .

I haven't seen good data on where those migrants are going. But FWIW, I've seen a huge bump of new followers on B and a much smaller one on M.

Perhaps M is getting as many new users as B, but new users on B are finding me more easily because I'm in several B "starter packs" (one on #OpenScience and one on #OpenResearch.)

ICYMI, #OCLC have recently published this report exploring strategies for improving the discovery of #OpenAccess content by academic #library users. This is a bit of a hobby horse for me as there are a number of potential GLAMR #discovery routes that remain somewhat behind the curve. This report appears to address some of these, so looking forward to digesting!
