Every year there is a single day, and this year it was today, when a tree in the backyard explodes into bloom and local honeybees absolutely engulf it in a frenzy of buzzing.

#Xylocopa californica or #BlackCarpenterBee emerging from a now deceased #FigTree. We probably have too many as they are very destructive, but the tree is being regrown from the roots, so eventually it will be ok again.

It is that time. Not the abomination of a double flowered cherry. This one is a powerhouse for insects.
And I get lost in a drop down menu.
Go easy folks.
Stop and listen to the hum of a passing bumble if you’re lucky enough to still have them in your vicinity.

#Bumblebees are able to start foraging earlier in the morning and continue until later in the evening when landmarks aren’t visible as they can use the polarised light of the sky as a GPS for guidance to their nest!

New paper shows that moth numbers are reduced in areas with higher levels of #skyglow compared to areas with lower levels of skyglow, regardless of whether one is near streetlights or not: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2025.126068
Not the greatest photo but the best I could manage. This is a male Hairy-footed Flower bee (Anthophora plumipes).
They zoom around like fighter jets and are very noisy.
It will use the daffodils because they are there but the real reason they are here is to feed from the shrubby Teucrium.

There's a lot of pollen going into the hives today. Seems to be yellow and that cream or buff colored cedar/arborvitae pollen. I currently have violas/violets on the ground blooming but they're not busy there but It seems there's yellow pollen flowers somewhere that are big enough to cover a bee with pollen.
Bees move so fast I have to take dozens of pics just to get one clear shot. I managed to take one mid-flight that reminds me of that cat meme.
What do you think?

Milder night last night so chanced the #moth box. Still early in the year so very few species / numbers yet (roll on May/June). More Common Quakers (x4) & Early Grey (x1). Also first sighting in 2025 of Oak Beauty and Small Quaker. Moths on my finger today are...
1) Oak Beauty (top left)
2) Small Quaker (top right)
3) Common Quaker (BL)
4) Early Grey (BR)
Just baking the insect hotel, as one does, to kill any dermestid beetles, book lice, and mites that are hiding in the cracks after the bee and wasp cocoons have been removed. #BeeHotel #InsectHotel #bees #wasps #hymenoptera #insects #pollinators #entomology
Join us for a walk in Springfield Park as we celebrate Spring with Sakura cherry blossom, fruit trees and their pollinators guided by tree expert & ecologist Russell Miller. We will look at how to identify Japanese cherries and fruit trees, as well as recording the pollinator species using blossom in the park. My first @peertube video!
A short recording in slow-motion of the activity of a nesting aggregation of ground-nesting bees, Colletes thoracicus, the Rufous-backed Cellophane Bee, along my driveway at the end of April 2024. I have been monitoring and observing this population since 2008.

Arctic #bumblebees have adapted to (up to now!) a short cool flowering season.
They have large first broods of about 16 female workers that forage continuously all day and overnight during bright #arctic nights.

Carrying heavy pollen loads on the legs makes #bumblebee flight more stable in windy conditions; but in calm weather bees with nectar-full honey stomachs are more nimble than those carrying pollen loads.
