Sustainable technology requires rethinking our relationship with electronic devices:
The @RightToRepair movement is making progress securing legislation for repairable products
Modular phone designs like @Fairphone show electronics can be built to last
Repair cafés and @iFixit empower users to extend device lifespans
Environmental tech isn't just about energy—it's about consumption patterns too.

My kid's phone battery puffed up while on vacation. I had to get creative and deliver a replacement a few stops away. I wish these things were easier to replace. It's not fun trying to remove a puffy battery worrying about "thermal runaway". It's like the modern version of bomb defusing
Now I have to find a place that will accept the old battery

I’m at the point where I have to pause my workflow to maintain my #ElectricKiln. At a time when we’re fighting for the #RightToRepair, I just want to mention that #Skutt kilns are designed not only to be easy to use, but also easy to fix. I’ve replaced relays & thermocouples with ease over the years. Not trying to be a product endorser here (in fact definitely buy a used kiln if you can find one) but Skutt products always make me wish that everything was designed this way. #ceramics
[edit: got help on the headphone parts hunt, thanks!]
On a related note, any AV nerds that can point me to where I can order replacement parts for these Bowers and Wilkins headphones?
It's got a nice click in and out cord, and squishy pads that pop off. Should all be fixable, but it's not my wheelhouse and my cog is trashed so searching this stuff out shreds my brain.
I'm in Canada, fyi re shipping etc.
Links and leads appreciated.

They are not just reasonable.
The Four Freedoms are as necessary as the Right-To-Repair if you want to avoid monopolies or hydraulic despotism.
@afewbugs @JoBlakely @gerrymcgovern i.e. Like with many products, much of the environmental and consumer crappiness is a product of predatory business models rather than a technical necessity. #righttorepair etc
Hey Mastodon!

"The economic turmoil and uncertainty makes the prospect of buying a new device, especially an already pricey smartphone, laptop, or gaming console, seem like it’s going to become a lot more expensive. And if buying something new becomes harder and harder, it makes more sense to keep what you already have going strong."
Website idea: a mashup of reddit and iFixit called “F these guys!” that surfaces/showcases 3d printable replacement parts and substitues for enshittified products. Things like replacement knobs for an oven, coat hooks, buttons for old stereos, car dashboard bits. Basically a pushback against planned obsolescence and the enshittification. Sure thingiverse and similar sites exist, but they are catch all. Difference here is a focused UI that encourages both models and replacement tutorials. Most stuff on Amazon is just plastic. The “vitamins” as the RepRap ppl call them are just a tiny portion of most manufactured goods. Website name is up for discussion. #3dPrinting #enshittification #maker #RightToRepair

> Singh recalls a young engineering student who visited his shop last year, desperate for a laptop to complete his coursework. “He had saved up for months but was still short of money. I put together a machine for him from spare parts, and he left with tears in his eyes. That is when you know this work matters.”
…Unless I am misremembering or misconstruing, I infer my phone was
- made in 2018
- entered the UK sales chain in 2019
- was ‘purchased’ by me in 2021
- is becoming more and more flaky in 2025
I just got a spam email offering to help me upgrade to iPhone 16. But I don’t want an iPhone 16.
I want Apple to sell plans to make their phones last as long as possible. But of course they won’t. They have unintelligent Apple intelligence to foist upon the world

Mastodon is my digital hygiene compromise, I'm still spending too much time online but now #bloomscrolling instead of doomscrolling. #mosstodon changed for ever the way I'm hiking.
I try to be deliberate in boosting beauty, from #pottery to #squirrel to #hopepunk because I believe we as a species cannot function on anger and fear alone.

Sarah has done a great job fixing a walker today and Kev is currently working on a pushchair.
We've also got a coffee machine, vacuum cleaner, toy car, and a radio in repair at the moment.
