A sidewalk in my neighborhood is covered with pink crabapple petals after a wind storm. Pink flowering crabapple trees bend over the sidewalk from curbside strips. You can see blue scilla growing on both sides as well as bright tulips and other spring flowers.

The first camas (Camassia quamash) flower I have seen this year. But I see a lot of leaves, so there should be an abundance soon! This meadow is part of the Seattle Parks native plant restoration effort.

A pleasant sidewalk for a dog walk on Easter Sunday: gardens and sidewalk borders are full of colors. There are red Japanese maples, pink crabapple, and bright green maples casting some shade. Flower beds are full of blue scilla and some tulips. A red and a pink camellia bush drop flowers onto the sidewalk. A small dog is busy sniffing the ground. The image has been processed for a colored pencil feel.

Evergreen huckleberries (Vaccinium ovatum) are blooming. This hardy native is evergreen, and used by wise people for hedges. Its blue huckleberries are very small but usually abundant, and tasty!

Amelanchier x grandiflora, downy serviceberry, has beautiful pink to white flowers and downy sage colored stems. It's a lovely, unusual looking small street tree which has a showy display of vivid colors in fall.

A bright yellow skunk cabbage flower spadix pushes out of its yellow spathe. It is growing out of a cluster of large, intensely green, oval leaves which will soon be the largest leaves in the area. This plant was growing on the side of a trail in muddy soil, surrounded by ferns and plant duff.

Here they are again! Arctic sweet coltsfoot (Petasites frigidus) on a warm sunny PNW day. I decided the dog and I should check out the muddy trails to see if anything was finally blooming, and anything was!

Arctic sweet coltsfoot or butterburr is blooming amid its big palmate leaves in Cowen Park. The flowers are collected in an umbel of composite blooms. Each composite is made of pink to white tubular flowers tightly packed together, a bit like dandelions. These plants like swampy soil, which I once discovered my to my chagrin. The dog was pretty well muddled up too.

Luscious vanilla

A multi-petaled star magnolia flower opens on a cool spring day. The bottom of the petals are tinted light pink, but the rest are a fine French vanilla color. Time for ice cream! There are buds next to the flower, looking like little brown fuzzy mice. One bud is starting to open into another vanilla blossoms.

I think silk tassel bush (Garrya elliptica) is hard to photograph because at least this year the catkins are so plentiful they look more like grayish strings tossed on the shrubs. However, a close up of the male plant's catkins shows a profusion of anthers entangled with each other on a long chain of gray to pink flowers.

Silk tassel bush catkins look like the flowers are growing out of the top flowers in long chains, but they are growing on the sides of a felty gray stem. The flowers look like little gray and pink bells hanging from the bells above them, full of anthers ready to release pollen into the crisp drizzly spring air. The long catkins sprout from the branches in small dense clusters that look like, surprise, long tassels! There are leaves around these flowers, round and evergreen with edges curling under.

A close look at a pink camellia bush show an abundance of buds just waiting to open alongside the delicate pink rose like blossoms. The light hits the pink petals just right, making them look like China, colorful tasting with the dark green, glossy, dentate leaves.
