I read Witch King by Martha Wells. Surprisingly, I didn’t enjoy it. There was a lot of world building (which is great) but not enough time for me to digest it or get to know the characters. It could just be the mental space I’m in. So, I liked the idea of the book but felt disengaged through the listening process. #Books #BookReview #Bookstodon #Book #StoryGraph #MiaoReads

I found The Girl from the Garden by Parnaz Foroutan to be a powerful book. The writing was strong and the story, based on the author’s own family history in early twentieth century Iran/Persia, heartbreaking. I probably wouldn’t have given this book a chance if not for the Jewish #StoryGraph challenge I’m doing. I guess there are benefits to reading outside of my comfort zone/typical genres. #Books #Bookstodon #BookReview #Jewish #Reading #Mazeldon #MiaoReads

I've finished: Scythe by Neal Shusterman

It was recommended as part of a Story Graph reading challenge under the prompt:

" 20. Dystopian Deconstruction (1 added)

Critiques the overused conventions of YA dystopias".

I found it to be a very conventional YA dystopia novel.

I see these prompts a a learning opportunity. If you've read Scythe and can enlighten me as to why it would be considered a diconstruction of YA dystopian conventions, I'd love to hear it. If you agree that it is not a diconstructi9on, can you recommend another novel for this prompt?

Mind you, in this reading challenge Anti YA is an adjacent prompt.

" 19. Anti-YA (2 added)

Challenges traditional YA tropes like the chosen one or insta-love."

I think this discussion will contain spoilers. So it will be continued in the next message with a content warning.

Reading children’s books is seriously going to mess with my #StoryGraph statistics and reader preferences!

But today I remembered that I can read Spanish. After this easy reader, I have chosen a young adult novel that should keep me occupied for longer. #Books #BookReview #Reading #MiaoReads

I listened to Me by Elton John on #audiobook. 5.0 ⭐

The #autobiography of a favorite #musician, read by the actor who played him in Rocketman.

Didn't think I would cry, but I did. 😭 Loved hearing about the #songwriting, making #music, and stories about other rockstars. Grateful I got to see him in #concert twice, once with Billy Joel.

I've finished: Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey

This is one Sarah Gailey novel I didn't think I'd finish.

I put it down a while ago, but a prompt in a reading challenge made me give it another go.

"9. Domestic Horror
Focuses on horrors within the family or home, often subverting safety and comfort."

app.thestorygraph.com/reading_

Toxic relationships are a significant aspect of Gailey's work. However, the levels of horror and generational trauma in Just Like Home were challenging.

It is a powerful story and I'm glad I made the effort to experience it to its conclusion.
