Sorry, #Cinemastodon, I know you’re doing your best, but if Coralie Fargeat puts the link to her mood board for #TheSubstance up on Bluesky, we‘re losing the battle for creative types.

Just finished watching #TheSubstance -- and Y'ALL.
I cannot articulate the depth of my admiration for Demi Moore's and Margaret Qualley's performances. Stunning, outstanding, and brilliant don't even begin to cover it.
And the scathing comment that this movie makes on our youth-obsessed culture -- it would be everything,if describing something as "everything" weren't falling into the precise trap this unbelievable and unhinged movie is excoriating.
Highly recommend. But expect gore.
I've just watched The Substance. It really is an EPIC, AUDACIOUS MASTERPIECE !! It's also BANANAS !! Actually, it reminded me a bit of Playdead's indie platformer, Inside. It's on Gamepass, the game I mean. The film I saw in an actual theatre.
Wasn't surprised to hear that Guillermo del Toro has been praising 'The Substance', he explored very similar themes in 'The Outside' episode of his 'Cabinet of Curiosities' series. In a way, Kate Micucci's Stacey walked so Demi Moore's Elisabeth could fly. The short story 'Some Other Animal's Meat' by Emily Carroll, which 'The Outside' adapted and epxanded on, is definitely worth checking out too.
(CW for themes of body dysmorphia explored through body horror)

Saw #TheSubstance & it’s a great #cronenbergian body horror but some odd choices, notably it’s placement in a Universe where social media doesn’t exist… it’s maybe 30 mins too long but the repetition feels deliberately exasperating (like the last 20 mins of #AClockworkOrange ?)… I don’t buy the ‘male gaze’ criticism I’ve seen in some reviews - yes, #margaretqualley ‘s beauty & youth is ceaselessly objectified but it seems odd to deny women the agency to desire in a film directed by a woman…
The Subtance
Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley
An aging celebrity tries a black-market drug that promises a better, younger self.
Bonkers script that fuses an all-out critic of the objectification of women with deranged visceral horror.
Filmmaker Coralie Fargeat pushes the concept to its most utmost limits, followed down that insane road by Qualley and Moore who give bold and outlandish performances.
Rating: A+
I loved THE SUBSTANCE. A batshit and highly enjoyable body horror movie that's a weird mix of Doestoevsky's THE DOUBLE, THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? Demi Moore gives a bold and courageous performance. Shot with claustrophobic closeups and great sound design. A completely visceral (literally and figuratively) cinematic experience that should be seen on the big screen. To hell with MEGALOPOLIS. THIS is the true outlier.
Rewatched #TheSubstance, still hyped.
If anyone in #Ōtautahi #Christchurch wants to do a group Halloween costume of the various stages of Elizabeth and Sue, I call dibs on Hag-Elisabeth.
I would bags the final form, but I don't have time or funds for that level of #prosthetics
New Blood Splattered Vlog!
This week The Horror Guru & Count Jackula review The Substance!
The latest body horror masterpiece by writer/director Coralie Fargeat, about an aging starlet's war with her younger self!
Starring Demi Moore, no less!
Good evening Fediversistas! Been into town with YD to the pictures. We watched #TheSubstance. Bloody hell.
Welp, seems I jinxed myself exulting about #TheSubstance and #bodyhorror, because my stupid #perimenopausal meatsack has hit me this week with some fresh hell.
Old pain returned, joined by new pain, and a new symptom I can't even bring myself to discuss on main.
Good Lorde, corporeality was a mistake.
Holy shit but see #TheSubstance in the theater if you can. It's Sunset Blvd sewn to Basket Case. Best movie experience this year. #HorrorCommunity #horrorfam.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieffMthcoCY I'm going to watch this. #TheSubstance
