I recently started writing for @popculturemaniacs .

My author page will contain them all: popculturemaniacs.com/author/a

So far, I've got two over there:
- Grand Theft Hamlet: popculturemaniacs.com/grand-th
- Love Me: popculturemaniacs.com/love-me-

I'll still write for my blog (such as yesterday's takeemtothemoviesaustin.review), with the intention of posting one on each site every week.

Two powerful World War II films now on Netflix

There are two outstanding movies about very divergent aspects of World War II currently available to watch on Netflix — Number 24 and The Six Triple Eight.

Number 24 is a Norwegian film that is both dubbed and subtitled in English, which painfully depicts the moral and ethical dilemmas that arise from warfare.  It follows the accounts of a highly decorated Norwegian resistance fighter (Gunnar Sønsteby) both during the war itself and many years later as he is describing his decisions and his unit’s actions to college students as a guest lecturer.

The film is extremely well done and will leave viewers examining their own inner quandaries of how they would have handled such situations in the fog of war. Without revealing too many details, the film is particularly poignant when his unit’s lethal actions against fellow Norwegians who collaborated with Germany are discussed with the students.

The Six Triple Eight is a triumphant film featuring an all-star cast, about the only black Women’s Army Corp (WAC) unit, the 6888, to be deployed to Europe during World War II. The extent of racism and bigotry directed towards these soldiers by their fellow Americans, including by their superior officers is simply appalling.

Kerry Washington is outstanding as the Major overseeing this unit as they train and then are deployed to resolve a seemingly unsolvable task with minimal help and limited time. Sadly, the film also reminds the viewer of how far the United States has yet to go to truly fulfill it’s  heralded promises to all Americans.

Both movies are highly recommended and neither is particularly long (under two hours each).

New year, new server, new #introduction !

I've become a #cinephile over the past 5 or 10 years, so I mostly talk about #movies here. I started a #MovieReview blog about two years ago (link in profile), covering new releases (no spoilers).

I'm also a #PhysicalMedia collector, both movies and #music (mostly #rock / #metal ).

Outside that, I'm a professional #programmer living in the Northeastern US. I spend a bunch of time on the #pickleball court. And I love (and collect) #BoardGames

Hello!

We recently saw Lee, the movie about wartime photographer Lee Miller, starring Kate Winslet. It's a terrific film, and Kate Winslett is utterly superb - surely she will get an Oscar for her commanding performance. It's written, directed, and produced by women, and it shows with its nuanced portrayal of an intelligent, driven, and passionate woman who did so much to expose the horrors of WWII. Highly recommended.

Watched Stalag 17.

This might be the saddest comedy I’ve ever seen. It was a combo of Mash and The Great Escape, but with a beautiful mystery in it. Holden was phenomenal, but I could shout out every side character (e.g. Kalser in his two scenes).

I never laughed once but the black comedy here is 10/10. This joins my collection of “perfect movies” because I genuinely don’t know what I could change to make it better.

Watched "Twisters" last night to distract myself from bigger real life disasters.. and it was "meh" (for me). Mostly because they started with the "main character" male lead as a social media influencer-YouTube streamer, but also because they failed to develop any of the characters except the main ones. Plus they cut/copied/paste the character types out of a standardized casting book, and were loosey-goosey on the science. I guess some people might find it fun, but I was not impressed.
