The Worst 7 Years in Boeing’s History—and the Man Who Won’t Stop Fighting for Answers

"Fatal crashes. A door blowout. Grounded planes. Inside the citizen-led, obsessive campaign to hold Boeing accountable and prevent the next disaster."

WIRED · The Worst 7 Years in Boeing’s History—and the Man Who Won’t Stop Fighting for AnswersBy Lauren Smiley

Reading an infographic in the latest issue of #WIRED magazine that refers to Elon Musk as "humanity’s wealthiest reply guy" and also as "Tex Luthor".

I subscribed to their print edition to support their reporting on #DOGE et al and I am not disappointed.

Nice work Elana Klein & Anthony Lydgate.

OK #NerdHiveMind, has anyone ever figured out how to access / create a #CondeNast account when you signed up for a #Wired digital-only subscription? I can log into the Wired site with the creds I set up initially, but trying to access / change account details pushes you to the CN site

the CN portal doesn’t accept my Wired creds, instead it insists that I must enter the account number printed on the label of the magazine that they ship to me 🤪 & every avenue of contact I’ve tried either bounces or seems to go to /dev/null… 😩

I’ve been trying for months to change my email address associated with the subs, but now I’m just over it & want to cancel before it auto-renews at 5x the intro 1-year price 😕

New from #wired who have been doing great reporting on #Musk:

#DOGE Is Working on Software That Automates the Firing of Government Workers

Operatives working for #ElonMusk’s #DOGE appear to be editing the code of #AutoRIF – software designed by the #Defense Dept that could assist in mass #firings of #FederalWorkers, sources tell WIRED.

WIRED · DOGE Is Working on Software That Automates the Firing of Government WorkersBy Makena Kelly

Astoundingly good “WIRED” article about my firing from VA and what it means

Yesterday, WIRED published an absolutely fabulous article* by Lily Hay Newman about my being fired by DOGE and what that means for the cybersecurity posture of VA.gov.

It sure ain’t good, folks. What’s happening to the U.S. government right now is every bit as bad as you think it is, and probably a lot worse.

The end of the article captures the rot at the root of DOGE and the Trump administration:

“There were these interviews we all had to do with the DOGE people the day after the inauguration,” he says. “In mine, one of them asked me to describe what I was doing at VA and then said something like, ‘If you’re doing all that work, why aren’t you working in the private sector where you could be making twice as much money?’ And I said, ‘Because I don’t care about the money. I care about serving veterans.’

“I think the fact that someone asked me that question at all is really telling.”

Here’s what you can do to fight back:

  • First, an easy one: subscribe to WIRED. It’s usually $30 per year but right now they’re offering a special: $10 for the first year. Their reporting on what Trump and Musk are doing is truly second-to-none. They are doing amazing journalism, and any media outlet doing good journalism right now needs our support.
  • If you are a federal worker, support and defend the Constitution. You took an oath to do that, and this is where the rubber hits the road. Do not obey illegal orders. Do not do things that violate your agency’s rules and regulations just because people from DOGE think they can make you.
Yes, this is risky. Yes, you may face discipline or even termination. This is a time for courage, bravery, and principles, not for blending in and not making waves. If you don’t stand up for what is right now, you won’t be able to later.
  • Please let any federal workers you encounter know that you appreciate and support them. You have no idea how much your support means to them.
  • Subscribe to the email lists for any of your U.S. senators and representative who are Democrats. You can find out who your electeds are here, and click through to their web sites where you will find instructions for subscribing.
Any Democratic senator or representative who isn’t emailing their constituents multiple times per week at this point letting them know what Trump and Musk are doing and what the senator/representative is doing to fight back isn’t doing their job. If yours fall into that category, then call them multiple times per week to ask why they’re not communicating with their constituents about what’s going on, and to let them know what’s the most important thing you’re worried about right now (5 Calls makes this easy!). The Republicans figured out decades ago that frequent communication is necessary to keep the base activated. How are Democrats still getting this wrong?

#Wired reported the identities of six software engineers with jobs in his wrecking crew. They span in age from 19 to their mid-twenties and have minimal government experience (if any), though most have connections to either #Musk or his onetime PayPal colleague Peter #Thiel, another right-wing Silicon Valley #billionaire whose data analytics firm Palantir holds valuable U.S. defense contracts. They are Akash Bobba, Edward Coristine, Luke Farritor, Gautier Cole Killian, Gavin Kliger, and Ethan Shaotran.

Updated with names of the 6 little shits.

"WIRED has identified six young men—all apparently between the ages of 19 and 24, according to public databases, their online presences, and other records—who have little to no government experience and are now playing critical roles in Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) project, tasked by executive order with “modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.” The engineers all hold nebulous job titles within DOGE, and at least one appears to be working as a volunteer.

The engineers are Akash Bobba, Edward Coristine, Luke Farritor, Gautier Cole Killian, Gavin Kliger, and Ethan Shaotran. None have responded to requests for comment from WIRED. Representatives from OPM, GSA, and DOGE did not respond to requests for comment."

WIRED has a fairly terrible AI booster story today:

Yes, That Viral LinkedIn Post You Read Was Probably AI-Generated
A new analysis estimates that over half of longer English-language posts on LinkedIn are AI-generated, indicating the platform’s embrace of AI tools has been a success.

I'm not going to link it. It should be easy enough to find if you must.

"indicating the platform's embrace of AI tools has largely polluted the information ecosystem there" is how it ought to read. "Success" is a wholly inappropriate word to use.
