The canopy has been removed from the fuselage so that I can glue in round foam 'rod' that will serve as a seal when the canopy is closed onto the canopy rail.

Tomorrow I will flip the canopy end-for-end and finish gluing the rest of the foam.

Fitting the foam will be through trial and error. In some sections the foam will be too thick...I'll sand it down. In sections where the foam is not thick enough...I'll put a thick layer of tape on the canopy rail.

A good canopy seal helps reduce noise, cold air leaks at high altitude, and can even improve glide performance a tiny bit.

Gluing the canopy with RTV silicone.

After 24 hours I pried apart my first coupon test sample.

Is the RTV silicone cured?

It's not tacky to the touch, but my nose immediately detected acetic acid. (After prying apart the test piece and letting the RTV get exposed to air over all the bonding surface...soon the vinegar smell was gone.)

Not fully cured.

I'll check my second test piece in another 24 hours....

My first test piece (bonding with RTV silicone) has been pried apart and inspected. The layer of RTV silicone is a ragged thin layer on the plexiglass square.

Gluing the canopy with RTV silicone.

1st - canopy elevated on spacer blocks to apply a bead of adhesive.

2nd - example of the worst, messiest squeeze out of adhesive.

3rd - RTV silicone needs the humidity in the air to cure. In the mountains of southern New Mexico that's in short supply. I'll have a crock pot filled with water to boost the humidity level. This will keep curing from taking too long.

4th - test piece of strips of plexiglass 1-1/2 inches wide...the width of the canopy frame's bonding flange. This practice piece let me determine the desired bead with, showed that the RTV silicone is fairly soft and I can easily compress the bead and it spreads over the entire bonding flange. Also, I'll cut this test strip into a few pieces and evaluate them to determine if curing is complete or not.

I'm hoping I can open up the canopy in 48-72 hours.

The glider canopy is elevated above the canopy frame with scrap blocks of foam. I'm ready to apply a bead of adhesive around 15 linear feet of the bonding flange.
After the canopy has been pressed into place and the RTV silicone bead has spread out, there is squeeze out in some places. This photo shows the worst example. If I can't easily remove this after curing is complete, I can tolerate it. It's not more than 1/4 inch high up the side of the clear canopy material.
Dry air does not help RTV silicone cure fast, so I'm heating a pot of water in the garage shop. This will boost the humidity level.
Test strips of plexiglass that have been glued with RTV silicone. This allowed me to refine technique, and provide me with coupon samples to evaluate the progress of curing.
