Standing up @nodebb on #Docker with #MongoDB.

A little while ago I was discussing with @raf the things I am looking for in online interaction that I'm not getting from traditional or federated social media. A lot of different things came up, but the most important and central is this:
the need to be able to have deep, complex conversations with people I trust, in a way that those conversations are not ephemeral, lost in the endlessly scrolling feed, like an infinite dark plain in which attention is but a circle of candlelight—but permanent, archived, accessible.

This is because I want to be able to collaborate with people to create ideas, with complexity and nuance, for which it's necessary to be able to build on the past and plan for the future.

What suggested itself was an Internet forum.

Unfortunately, I have to look for a new job.

I'm an #iOS and #macOS #software #developer, experienced in #UIKit, #AppKit, #ObjectiveC, #Swift and #SwiftUI, have worked with the #Parse framework as well as #Realm / #MongoDB and the whole toolchain around it. I have been working in software development for about 30 years and am looking for a remote position (permanent role, preferably in an AT/DE startup).

In my looking at #Newsblur I was curious whether #MongoDB could be replaced by #PostgreSQL with JSONB storage. This article is somewhat annoying to read on anything that isn't a desktop browser, but shows that with more documents PostgreSQL uses much more disk space, and queries slow down, so I guess it does make sense to keep it there.

Fucking #mongodb is essentially useless to me now, since I can't run it on anything that resembles a local VM.

Just replacing everything I used it for with MySQL JSON field types.

For reference: I develop *everything* on local VMs, typically in Debian 12 arm64 running in VMware Fusion on whatever MacBook I'm using at the time (I have M1 Air and M3 Pro models).

Why?

Self-contained and power-outage-proof.
