“Apple’s long-lost hidden recovery partition from 1994 has been found”
This is a fascinating deep-dive into a classic recovery partition that existed nearly twenty years before Apple stopped shipping physical install media. Originally seen on r/VintageApple #VintageApple #VintageMac #RetroMac #RetroComputing #MARCHintosh downtowndougbrown.com/2025/03/

This was a fun quick procrasti-project. It's double-sided too (it's a blinking question mark after all)!

I don't have a multi-filament printer so I implemented a satisfying no-glue snapidy-snap system to print the distinct black and white parts (but there's also a file in there if your printer can do multi-colour!)

It can also be a luggage tag, or keychain, or just a fidget token (it's got a nice heft to it).

when i was a kid, you could build a simple game or application by dragging and dropping a few UI controls, and gluing them together with a few dozen lines of BASIC or Pascal or HyperTalk. it might take 15 minutes, at most, to get your little character walking around on the screen. this is how we ended up with a lot of hilariously good and cheap shareware you could share on BBSes in the 90s.

for the past year i've been quietly working on building a software thingie that doesn't exist anymore. i've been building a software toolkit that's kinda like Visual Basic and HyperCard and Borland Delphi, designed for making tile-based 2d games.

i've been using it to build my own little goofy games, and improving on the drag'n'drop IDE as i figuring things out. it's not done yet, and has a long ways to go before it's ready for other people to start making their own little applications and games. think PICO-8 or ZZT if they had grown up on a steady diet of Windows 3.1 and GeoWorks Ensemble instead.

i'm really, really bad about polishing turds to infinity and never releasing them. to break that habit, i've built a mini-website for the IDE/Shareware Creation Kit. it's called Exigy, named like a bad 80s metal hair band or richard garriott game.

i'll be posting weekly blog/devlog updates there, so i don't irritate anyone with them on this account. there is an rss feed button at the top right if you hate my demonic php and css.

The battery replacement went well, the #spicypillows are removed, and am working on my #macPro again.

The bottom plate is definitely warped. 😩

The directions that came with the replacement battery was way more involved than it needed to me; having me remove the motherboard and everything. Yea, sure you could go that path but there is a less invasive approach (and less risk of damaging parts or connectors with my sausage fingers).

Up and working again - and in line for getting #OCLP configured on this mid-2015 #macbook_pro

@spirelli2 They used to exist. I’ve seen them. Saving a search on eBay may be your only hope.

Worst case, you could build this PC serial to Mac serial (RS-232 to RS-422) adapter, and pair it with a more-common USB-to-RS232 adapter. Downside, it looks like you’d have to cannibalize a cable. henlin.net/2021/12/21/Building

People say the USB adapters might not support LocalTalk, but it’d connect you to serial peripherals like printers.

I haven’t tried this, but I hope it helps you.
