So #FastMail is great overall, but I'm having pretty serious problems with it sending too much to spam.

Receipts, email validations, shipping notifications, it's gotten much worse. Years ago, I rarely had to check spam, maybe once or twice a month and I'd catch a couple things. Now I have to check ALL the time. And when I tell it something doesn't belong, it doesn't learn. A day or two later I find that same sender back in spam again. I'm getting tired.

#ProtonMail doesn't support grabbing your email via IMAP from another service (there is a desktop gateway for paid users).

They do have an export tool (proton.me/support/proton-mail-) but it spits out a bunch of .eml files with JSON metadata.

I wrote a quick script to convert such an export into a classic mbox file, which should be suitable for importing into, say, #Fastmail

Anyway, the script is here:

(I wrote the script in like 5 minutes, don't judge me.)

Okay, I got my domains back at #FastMail, and was excited to see they import from #Proton, so theoretically I could get those couple weeks of email back into my FastMail account. But it asks for an MBOX file and Proton exports stuff into .json and .eml.

Any idea how to get Proton emails over to FastMail? Or what an MBOX file is?

Shifting over to #Proton from #Fastmail. I just found out (after moving my primary domain) that on Proton you can’t filter emails for CONTENT. You can only filter for sender, subject, or attachment. That’s it. Which means the primary way I filter out crap, by having a folder that catches anything with “unsubscribe” anywhere in the body of the email, won’t work anymore. 😫

Hey #fediverse I've not been paying much attention lately but I'm interested in having an account hosted at my own vanity domain but I do not want to use a single account instance to accomplish that. I'd love to pay a hosting provider, much like I can pay #Fastmail to host my mailboxes at michaelharley.net, but with my mastodon accounts.

Is this feature on any feature roadmaps for mastodon?

Been a #Fastmail user since 2021 and have no complaints. It was my first step in moving away from Google. However, I have yet to cross/need that much storage. After so many years of mail usage, I have still only consumed 1.5G. Also I rarely if ever use the webmail UI or calendar integration. mutt on desktop and K9 on Android is enough for my needs. With Fastmail's upcoming price hike, switched to #Migadu.

The only thing that took time was copying old mails. Just had to add the domain, create a mailbox and flip the DNS settings in the external nameserver at #deSEC and done.

Quite like Migadu's spartan UI and can have individual mailboxes for both the domains I own. They also replied to my initial query within an hour!.

The approximately four generations deprecated VM that handles my email is finally being killed off by my ISP, and I can't really say that I blame them. I have about a month to find a new email provider for #SMTP and #IMAP. No, I'm not going to host it myself again. Suggestions? So far #Fastmail looks like it's not complete and utter dogshit although obviously it will never be as capable as my tangled mess of custom #exim and #procmail.

Email alternatives:
Note that I currently pay $50USD/year for FastMail, which just renewed for another 3 years (oops) as of October 2024

purelymail.com looks very very interesting, would be $10-20 USD/year. I will keep an eye on them, they may be very useful for migrating family off iCloud email.

runbox.com/app/account/plans looks like it will end up around 15% more expensive than FastMail for me, I will have to seriously think about dropping a couple of my domains.

migadu.com/pricing/ lol, I'm not going to count the number of emails in/out per day, although checking the past 3 years I don't get that much email any more (RIP to the open Internet, right?). I wonder if that includes spam. One of the only providers I've seen with IPv6 MX records.

mailbox.org/en/private-custome looks okay but works out at twice the cost of FastMail yearly - without tax, I think, if I go for the same amount of storage I currently have.
I could probably drop some of my archives and fit in the 3 EUR/month plan, though.

Microsoft 365 no longer has custom domain support: support.microsoft.com/en-au/of

PS: no one's going to deliver email to IPv6-only hosts, are they?
