How do people feel about #ProtonMail? I would like to get off gmail, mostly as a matter of principle, and the basic plan is $5/month *Canadian*, which is pretty cheap, but I'm curious what other people's experience has been. Specifically, have you had any trouble with their "bridge" app to using your own email client (NB: I'm on #Betterbird).
Proton is leaving because Proton cannot control the flow of information here on the Fediverse.
Most corporations mimic social algorithms to their advantage, particularly, to suppress news and information that may not paint them in a good light. Proton cannot do that on the Fediverse.
When Proton rebranded a few years ago, which caused some people to lose their accounts with no refund, they silenced any complaints on both Facebook and Reddit. I know, because I was one of those people. Most of you were happy to have the new upgraded accounts, but if you had the original family plan, which they discontinued (only to start selling a new family plan months later), you were not a happy person to find out you lost your service.
Additionally, it has been brought to people's attention that Proton now falls under Us-jurisdiction. Proton would like to argue that is only for Proton Wallet, but our legal system does not allow a company to pick and choose. Plus, even if they could (you cannot), it means they could still be pressured and influence by US Politics and US Laws now. This was another little fact, Proton wanted to suppress, but cannot because the Fediverse is organic, and not centralized.

Canceling my subscription with #Proton and could use some advice on alternatives. I looked at #Startmail and #Tuta but I've been using Proton for #CloudStorage, #Calendar, and #Aliases.
Dear @protonprivacy
I wanted to reach out and share my thoughts on your decision to leave Mastodon. As a user who values privacy and decentralization, I believe your presence on this platform is crucial.
Mastodon is not just a social media platform; it’s a community that shares your commitment to privacy. By staying, you can continue to lead the conversation around secure communication and inspire others to prioritize their online privacy.
Let’s keep building a safer digital world together! Please reconsider your decision.
@MissGayle no, the servers don't even allow to send emails unencrypted, so all the emails must be e2e encrypted, there is no data mining, in fact the #ArcaneChat and #DeltaChat apps focus on removing all possible metadata from email even if you use them with ex. #gmail, you don't even need to use https://arcanechat.me server, you can even setup your own, unlike #protonmail and #tutanota, this is not a silo that requires to use their specific app with their specific central server
Proton is leaving Fediverse second time. Will there be a second come-back?
Afterall, their target audience is on Fediverse. Those who remain on proprietary social dumpsites do not care about e-mail privacy either

I'm looking at what other Big Tech stuff I can remove from my life. Google is obviously the biggest one.
Does anyone here use ProtonMail? Any of their other products?
Happy I Love Free Software Day!
Unfortunately, this year I could not join nor organize any in-person celebration, BUT of course I want to share my gratitude to the many, countless #FreeSoftware services I don’t merely use, but actually depend on.
Last year, I decided to focus only on #YunoHost, because it would have been crazy to list all the projects I use and I love.
This time, even if I will most certainly forget someone, I am challenging myself to mention all the #LibreSoftware my life is powered by.
Without further ado, THANK YOU to:
Lastly, but most importantly, the biggest thank you goes to all the free software libraries and dependencies the above mentioned #software are made of/built with, including #C, #JavaScript, #Python, #Rust, and all community-maintained programming languages.
I am super sorry if I forgot someone!
Is #protonmail still a viable alternative to gmail?
Now that google is pretty much a tool for fascists, I want to migrate some, if not all of my google stuff elsewhere. I saw proton as a decent alternative, but then their ceo started praising trump. Is there a better alternative, or should I just stick with proton?
smart informed friends who know about #tech and #privacy: what free (or nearly free) alternative #email are we liking best and trusting most these days? is #protonmail still the go-to?
Apparently @protonprivacy Mail does not work with IDN-enabled addresses - web client calls them "invalid"
But if you rewrite IDN domain (repečka.com
) to punycode (xn--repeka-l2a.com
) manually, is able to deliver.
Proton Mail is down AGAIN. This is the second time in a month. Between this and the CEO saying Trump is awesome, I think I'll switch to some other service. Or hell, maybe I'll just go back to Gmail. At least it's free and I don't remember it ever going down. Gah, all tech companies suck. #ProtonMail #Proton
Since we are still on the topic of collaborators; Proton CEO Andy Yen is apparently pleased as punch with Trump and his cabinet picks, because he is against Big Tech

Proton hasn't been 'small tech' for a long time now;

No, the 'foundation' won't protect you;

Time to consider moving elsewhere, perhaps?

I'm considering switching my #email to #PurelyMail (https://purelymail.com ) - anything nefarious about them? I was using #ProtonMail but that company has shown themselves to be beneath contempt
The current #Proton outage is even locking me out of my #ProtonPass. This is bad. One thing is not being able to check emails or to access cloud storage, another is not being able to access one’s own passwords!!!
I am seriously thinking about moving back to #KeePassXC, that served me so well for so many years (not just because of this particular event, but because it is a community-maintained, local-first software, much less prone to this kind of troubles)!
This is unacceptable, @protonprivacy.
Proton Says It’s "Politically Neutral" While Praising Republican Party. "It's reasonable to worry that tech companies' backbone for protecting users in this way might soften when they get too politically involved with any one administration," said Andrew Crocker, EFF's surveillance litigation director. https://theintercept.com/2025/01/28/proton-mail-andy-yen-trump-republicans/ #Proton #ProtonMail #AndyYen
Today, Proton, although overseas in Switzerland, has a US-based division of the company (Proton Wallet), and is proclaiming how great Donald Trump is.
But people will continue to use Proton Mail, Proton Pass, Proton Drive, Proton VPN, and whatever other new product or service they come up with next.
Why? Because it is convent to ignore the Nazis sympathizer in the room. Because the Nazis sympathizer, gives you what you want, and so you selectively pick and choose, by claiming "that's different". All while giving the Nazi in the room clout, credibility, money, power, and influence.
Nazis took over, because people were willing to compromise. And when you compromise, you become compromised.

@lauren I have been begging people to leave gmail for years...I have mentioned #protonmail which has served me well, and I use several search engines - #DuckDuckGo, #Mojeeck, #StartPage, #Metager - No #tracking - #privacy even a bit of privacy, is better than none. Folks, please leave the #BigTech ecosystem asap. We are here, so that is a huge step. #facebook, #instagram, #TikTok are just as perilous for everyone, even more now post election. Be safe. #mastodon #fediverse #choice #civilliberties
Had anyone got receipts of proton CEO being fashy? Not doubting or anything, just want to see them.
