One Million Years Ago I met two adorable #Chinese exchange students at college in Utah. Their names were Frances and Michelle. The said they would teach me Mandarin. I practiced 20 or so phrases and they critiqued my pronunciation whenever I was at their apartment.

They said a greeting was very important, so they taught me how to say hello. They said in #Mandarin it was important to greet women differently from men. I don't have any idea how to spell/transliterate this, but they said I had to say to them, every time we met, something like "Ni hao, Pio Liang." They were very happy when I said it, clearly because I was doing so well.

A few months later, we had all drifted apart (as is common in college) and I met another Mandarin speaker. She was surprised to learn there were gendered greetings in Mandarin. I told her what Frances and Michelle had taught me for "hello [to women]" and she laughed so hard she cried. It took a minute or two for her to be able to tell me Frances and Michelle had trained me to say they were very beautiful every time I saw them.

No regrets. They were quite beautiful.

A great podcast to understand why various Chinese dialects (or rather, languages), came to be spoken in Malaysia.

Ps: My ancestors prob came during the wave of migration after the collapse of the Ming dynasty. This is probably the origins of the northern Peranakans.

Hello world! I'm Yingtai from Singapore, new to this instance. My pronouns are she/her, and I'm at the tail end of Generation X.

I enjoy geekiness spanning the sciences and humanities, especially speculative fiction. Calligraphy and bullet journalling make me happy. I am my own avatar artist.

I care deeply about ethical #kink, covid, accessibility and my #SingaporeGangsterCat. Right now I'm meowing a lot about learning #Mandarin as long covid permits.

You know what they say: no g̶o̶o̶d̶ d̶e̶e̶d̶ triumphant return to power goes unpunished

The text behind the door in the calendar today says:
"Warmest Thoughts".
I assume there were translation issues and what Bonne Maman meant to say was:
"See You In Hell 💖"

Tastes a bit like a citrus-based cleaner with sugar in it. My esophagus now has a streak-free shine

#Introduction I'm here to listen to you gush about your passions!! These days I'm into #Symphogear, #IdolAnime, and #Yuri (#LGBT anything, tbh). I also really like #TheUntamed/#CQL, #DanMei, #WuXia, and will get around to reading all of #MXTX one of these days. I'm also a language student, mainly #Mandarin and #Japanese atm. Oh I'm also probably the biggest fan of "#Ojou" type characters in #Anime that you know...a little weird/niche but hey, that's why we're on this instance, right?!?!
