#MakersHour A2:

I expect I won't be the only person here to say: #3DPrinting

It's pretty revolutionary being able to turn out small custom parts for all sorts of things.

Also an honourable mention to modern #microcontroller platforms and tool-chains. The fact you can just grab something like an ESP32 module for a couple of quid and rapidly have custom code hooked up with sensors, relays, etc and wifi connected is pretty amazing.

And the culmination of today's little(!?) side-quest is I now have couple of USB-C/BarrelJack power adapters. One longer, one shorter.

The longer one is just as you last saw it, but I've made a more secure shorter one with the resistor(s) built in. As far as I can tell this works fine for both pulling 5V from a USB-C wall-wart as well as injecting voltage into my USB-C microcontroller boards (in which use case I've not yet looked into whether the resistors between GND and CC1/2 ought cause any issues, "working so far" is the situation.)

This is how I'll connect the solar panel to the remote board, but also useful at the test-bench per se.

Don't come crying to me if you try this and everything goes fizz-pop and bursts into flames. OK.

RIP a large chunk of today's TODO list. 📒 💀 ⚰️ 🪦

Right, some initial notes on these #RP2350 Melopero Perpetuo #LoRa boards: yvan.seth.id.au/melopero-perpe

Long story short: they work... I can make LEDs flash, that's the key thing... right? 😂 Can also read the internal temperature sensor and check battery status.

A few "bugs" in the examples and a slightly faulty board.

So far, so good... Next job is to get one of them transmitting the temp and battery status to the other. Will need to think about how to "package" that data for reliable tx/rx, probably need some redundancy, etc, maybe a buffer window of data. Then I need to dig out some of my various sensors and decide what to hook up to the "remote" to send to the local. The local will probably then relay data to a connected computer via the serial console I guess.

Project #Polytunnel Telemetry is GO! Well, if I can get a signal that far, otherwise this becomes project #Greenhouse Telemetry... the greenhouse is about 30 metres away, the polytunnel is a kilometre.

OK, worked this out. One of the contacts on the BOOTSEL button is connected to ground on the working board and just seems to be floating on the non-working board. I've not been able to spot why. But if I bridge that contact to ground, hold down the button, and power up the board it correctly enters mass storage mode.

Can't say I'm super impressed by Melopero's QA on this, and I doubt this happened in shipping.

Shall be interesting to see how they respond.

It's probably just about within my soldering capabilities to bridge that to ground with a little wire.

*Anyway*

This was what all today's hassle and stress was about.

A pair of #RP2350 #LoRa #microcontroller boards.

First job with these is to get them talking to each other, and then try some sort of range test. Melopero have some basic demo code on Github so this should hopefully be simple enough.

Need a microscope to see the text on some microchips these days! And I don't think that's entirely due to my old eyes.
