Does anyone here self host Mastodon with @yunohost ?
I'm just curious how well it works given Masto's reputation for being tricky to upgrade without breaking?
Please boost for a larger sample size! Tx!

Creating A GoToSocial Instance on FediHost
#Blind people who #SelfHost, has anyone used #FreshRSS? Currently using #Miniflux, and I like how #accessible it is, but FreshRSS seems to be a little more powerful and I'm tempted to try it. The only thing is that I briefly tried the demo instance, and it didn't seem to be the most accessible. Is anyone using it successfully?

I have PikaPods host my audiobook shelf and I just increase resources when I need them. Thinking about opening up mine to others but no easy way for others to cover costs so for now it's just me, but well worth it! https://www.pikapods.com/apps #SelfHost #SelfHosting @hollie @pink
@geerlingguy any chance of looking into #Peertube? #selfhost your own #videos, get paid through #patrons, #tips, direct #sponsorships?
I set up a peerture recently for #FiresideFedi and it's the best way to allow folks to watch your videos IMO
You're not beholden to other companies. Even #Floatplane can be #pressured by law suits, #BigTech, etc. Just because it hasn't doesn't mean it won't. Doubt they'd risk their #platform for 1 person.
The Nextcloud instance from Hetzner that I use comes with 1TB(!) of storage for just 5€/mo, including backups etc. That’s quite acceptable :) And yes, I am very aware of the fact that storing data encrypted in Nextcloud needs a few additional steps. And yes, other companies make similar offers. And yes, you can absolutely #selfhost too but that’s not the point of this thread. It’s about moving your contact list away from Apple to an open source solution, enabled by open standards.
@GottaLaff aside: I couldn’t figure out why my #selfhost server was so slow for a couple minutes there… then I realized you boosted my reply.
Poor old 2009 #footimac under my stairs is getting a workout this morning.
I reached out for recommendations to populate my feed with cool tech people, these are the results. This starter pack will set fire to your feed. Thanks for alle the help to: @JoBlakely @annie @bammerlaan @NatureMC @_elena @MsDropbear42 and @maiathecyberwitch for suggestions and help coming into the fediverse
Dropped some new features for selfh.st/apps this morning that include updated bookmarking functionality, custom views for sharing with others, and new sort options (project age).
Check it out and let me know if you have any feedback!
Suggestions for an Australian registrar for 1x .au and 2x .id.au with self-service for DNSSEC?
Trying to get DNSSEC set up for one of our .au domains, progress so far:
17th 06:28: sent support ticket
17th 06:57: response to say this has been forwarded to the billing department (eh?)
19th 15:27: response apologising for delay, saying they have forwarded it to "the registry for processing"
21st 17:52: "still awaiting an update from the registry "
(Sydney time I think.)
How hard does it need to be?
We have three .au domains across two registrars both of which require a support ticket to be submitted to do anything about DNSSEC... I think we'll want to consolidate these to a single registrar with better online self-service tools.
Meanwhile on decent domain registration providers I can simply log into their admin and update it myself. (Mythic Beasts, obviously, and Joker.com who I've used for many many years... but these don't do .au.)
I was mostly ignoring all this buzz about backing up your ebook library from amazon because I didn't think I needed to because I try to only buy drm free books. But I realized my spouse has a bunch of ebooks from over the years so I decided to have a go at it. I was able to backup over 90 books myself, including some comics that I forgot I had from before Amazon bought comixology. I then set up on a headless calibre server for us to be able to easily access our ebook library..
All this had me thinking.. But what about the audiobooks? (My spouse also has used Audible (also owned by amazon) for years before switching to libro.fm). so today I decided to backup all of her audiobooks as well, and I found a audiobookshelf ( https://audiobookshelf.org ) to self host an audiobooks library as well.
We now have all of our books outside of the control of others.
Now just to be very clear. I have paid for each and every single one of the 210 books, so I see my actions as making a personal backup that is actually usable. Is all. I can now #selfhost my books, just as I do with my music, TV Series and movies (that I have also all bought, most of it as physical media. Yes, I have quite a big space reserved for physical media like vinyl, CD, DVD in my apartment. Ripped all of it to my NAS Server)
Great update here on the goings-on in the technical world of #Mastodon. Including Quote Posts being officially supported for viewing in the web interface in v4.4 and full authoring/creation of Quote posts for v4.5.
Also, for #selfhost folks and others running an instance, v4.1.x will be removed from the official support list and stop receiving updates in April, presumably in preparation for the release of v4.4.

if you've been contemplating your very own #fedi home, the latest #goToSocial release candidate is the one that adds post editing, push notifications, and subscribe-able block/allow-lists:
https://gts.superseriousbusiness.org/@gotosocial/statuses/01JKE1H0WT9FCSP8N5EBX3FG87
(also the docs are excellent, i was going to write up my experience setting it up a few weeks ago, and ended up not bothering because everything was already in the docs)
For those that #selfhost and have a #homelab and use something like a #minipc for #proxmox, #docker and other small projects e.g. #PiHole, Bluesky, Mastodon, VPN server, #Nextcloud, what hardware would you recommend? Budget around AUD4-500 (USD250-300), dual-NIC in case I do something routery with it later, doesn't need any wireless connectivity, not going to be connected to monitors or do any media serving/transcoding, won't be a NAS (but I reckon 512GB storage is minimum), power and noise not a problem as it'll be in a comms rack in garage (but would prefer not some huge 2U ProLiant or whatever just so it doesn't wrench it off the wall. I don't mind having "last year's" spec, or considering a refurbed SFF desktop I can load with RAM, storage and NICs.
So... anyone in the #selfhost community have a good Spotify alternative? Specifically the recommendations part of Spotify; I already have a Subsonic-compatible streaming audio server.
Even just a simple setup for "I've analyzed your playlist and think you might like X" would work great for me.
Mostly just looking to stop spending money on places that accelerate the decline of things and spend more on supporting people that need it.
Spotify fails the first test spectacularly.
Friends...
#Colocation and/or #VPS #options in eastern #Ontario #Canada run by a #Canadian company?
Preferably centred around or near #Ottawa for coloco. VPS less concerned on location other than #Toronto/ #Ottawa/ #Montreal backbone areas.
Any options? Web searching seems to pull up enterprise grade ($$$) or mickey mouse stuff or US companies with Toronto PoPs.
For frame of reference I currently have stuff on Linode/Akamai and Ionos.
Alternatively, if anyone is operating or interested in starting a coloco cooperative in the #Almonte/ #Renfrew/ #Arnprior/ #CarletonPlace/ #Perth areas please reach out. Maybe there is critical mass to build or I can help something already operating...
Ok, if anyone can solve my little #selfhosting power problem, it's the people connected to me on Mastodon. Feel free to boost.
I just turned off a #Juniper switch that was pulling like 200W and replaced it with a #Mikrotik switch that pulls 20W. The Juniper had one benefit that the Mikrotik lacks, and that's dual power supply. Mikrotiks just have one 24V 1.5A DC in.
If I want to buy 2 power supplies and connect them to my 2 UPSes and achieve some measure of redundancy, is it possible? What's the name of the device and is it expensive? I've drawn a picture to help.
If this is like past tech questions I've asked on Mastodon, I'm gonna get 10 Alibaba links to a "bivalent multivolt snargleprong" or some shit I've never heard of, and everyone else has like 3 in their top desk drawer.
