The pieces the local masons produce and the work remaining at Noguchi's atelier aren't vastly different—he was clearly working within an established tradition, though taking its craft and materials in different directions. But all of it, his and his neighbors' work, is beautiful in its own way and a credit to the labor that produces it

Takamatsu II

The pouring process was done in two stages. The top section has been poured with a mixture of cement and crushed mussel shells, the rest of the body has been poured with coarse sand added to the mix. Once the concrete had cured, the roof section has been wet polished while the rest has been wire brushed. Resulting in different textures, feels and looks.

Fun fact: I got a new idea for a series when we wandered around the National Museum of Ireland (Archaeology).

Another fun fact: At least one of these photos serves as inspiration for things within that series.

A writer’s mind never, ever takes a vacation.

An old stone wall covered with ivy. There’s an opening in the wall—including a wrought-iron gate—leading into a garden, buttressed by two stone statues (one shown).

A very old and craggy tree, with thick branches that are so heavy and knobby they are resting on the ground. Moss is growing along many of the branches. The base of the tree is at least five feet diameter, with ivy growing up most of its height.

The opposite side of the stone wall, as described in the other photo. On this side there is less ivy, and both stone sculptures can be seen. A short tree is also growing on the right side of the opening.

Sunlight gently illuminates a narrow stone alley lined with ancient buildings, giving a rustic feel. A lone tree with budding leaves adds a touch of nature to the otherwise stony pathway, while the clear blue sky contrasts with the weathered walls.

Abandoned Dalmatian villages that residents left in search of work and survival. Many are now being renovated into luxury villas by returnees or foreign investors.

Remains of an old, small sandstone quarry in the forest. On the exposed stone slope there is a large root of a beech tree growing over a precipice. The root resembles a lizard that helps the tree stay alive. One of the large stones below the lizard resembles a simplified silhouette of a sad human head.

'Old Tower'

Podaca is a seaside tourist resort on the Adriatic coast, Croatia. Above the town is an old settlement and a tower from the 17th century.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 7: Celtic knotwork carved into an ancient gravestone. Several of these were on display in a little museum area of a church we visited on the Isle of Man in 2017. Hubby had gifted me a macro lense add-on for my camera, and I was enjoying making use of it for picking out details like this.
