I thought I recognised this guy's photo and realised I'd seen him protesting at the #UniversityOfExeter for which he was sentenced to six weeks in prison

I'm still not sure of the effectiveness of these tactics in tackling climate change, but I'm beginning to suspect giving people with a lot of educational and social capital prison experience may end up doing a surprising amount for prison reform

‘The prison system is insanely broken’: a climate activist on his experience in jail

"The entire apparatus is executed with maximum emphasis on punishment and a superficial mention of rehabilitation. Many people resort to smashing the contents of their cells or self-harming as a way to access ... help... It is absolutely no wonder that re-offending rates are so high when those leaving prison are in a worse way than when they came in."

The Guardian · ‘The prison system is insanely broken’: a climate activist on his experience in jailBy Guardian staff reporter

It seems unlikely that the sentences handed out to Just Stop Oil protestors will be reduced after the High Court appeal yesterday, but what the demonstrations outside the Court suggested was that rather than just punishing these protesters, the judges may have produced an emerging narrative of sacrifice & martyrdom that may actually prove a helpful organising device for JSO.

Much will depend on how the Appeal plays out (we'll likely know in March).

The Guardian · Hundreds protest in London as jailed climate activists’ appeals are heardBy Damien Gayle

Two #JustStopOil protesters have sprayed paint on Charles Darwin’s grave at Westminster Abbey.

Alyson Lee, 66, and Di Bligh, 77, covered the memorial using orange paint with a message that said “1.5 is dead" this morning.

In August 2022 Dr Patrick Hart, 38, caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to 16 fuel pumps at Thurrock Motorway Services, in Grays, Essex, during a #JustStopOil demonstration.

The Bristol-based GP hit the pumps with a hammer, sprayed them with orange paint and "obstructed or otherwise interfered with the refuelling of vehicles".

He was sentenced to 12 months on Tuesday after being found guilty of causing criminal damage.

He will be remembered as someone who tried to do something, a hero

ICYMI:

Following an earlier threat, Gaie Delap is going back to prison as there is no tag that can be used to enforce her non-custodial sentence as a Just Stop Oil protestor.

As has been pointed out already, this is the result of the firm that provides the tags being unable to comply with their legal obligation to provide the means by which she can be monitored:

Result Gaie Delap will spend Christmas in prison.... because profits come before her rights!

The Guardian · Elderly activist to spend Christmas in prison because tag does not fitBy Diane Taylor

Just to add to the injustice of locking up Just Stop Oil protesters now one of them is being recalled to prison because despite being eligible to serve her sentence while be monitored, the private company is unable to provide a suitable electronic tag.... & have notified authorities that she needs to be rearrested.

It is a case study in disproportionate 'justice' & reflects badly on all those who've not agreed a doorstep probation that was fine on remand!
