Mapping #Antarctica's hidden ice-free lands: A blueprint for conservation phys.org/news/2025-01-antarcti paper: nature.com/articles/s41597-025

"The ice-free lands are home to uniquely adapted flora including micro-forests of #lichens, #moss, and two flowering plants, Antarctic hairgrass and pearlwort. They also sustain a variety of #mites, #springtails, #tardigrades, #nematodes, #algae, and #microbes. #Seabirds have established breeding colonies in these areas too."

Rethinking asexuality: the enigmatic case of functional sexual genes in #Lepraria. By Meredith Doellman bmcgenomics.biomedcentral.com/

"#lichen called Lepraria, long assumed to be asexual, still has the genes that govern sexual reproduction. These #lichens contrary to what scientists have thought for decades, may have secret sex lives that no one has been able to observe."

Hey there!

New Map Reveals the Extent of Vegetation in Antarctica eos.org/articles/new-map-revea

"Scientists have now mapped out vegetation across the whole of coastal #Antarctica. Patches of vascular #plants, #bryophytes, #lichens, and #algae dot ice-free areas, and green #SnowAlgae cover sections of coastal snowpack... More than 40 square kilometers of vegetation cover Antarctica, including in previously unknown areas. A new map offers fresh insights for #conservation amid #ClimateChange."

Found this apparently completely dried piece of lichen on a rock, scattered by black bears when foraging.
I took it home, watered it all over, and put it in a small cup.
The second photo, taken 24 hours after watering, shows how quickly lichens and mosses recover after a rain.

Reposting #Introduction on new server.

I live on a #LandForWildlife property in #Lilydale in the north of #Tasmania, #Australia. I am documenting its amazing #biodiversity by recording on my website (mainly with photos) every species that live here. You can see the #animals, #plants, #fungi and more at tasforest.com/ and some on #iNaturalist.

I mainly post photos of #marsupials #birds #insects #lichens #mosses and #fungi with occasional freshwater and burrowing #crayfish
