A tiny and complex bit of silver-grey lichen composed of many tiny birds-nest shapes and some longer flat pieces with tinier dots that will presumably grow into more of those tiny bowls. The surrounding twig, smaller than finger diameter, is dark and bumpy, mostly blurred- bark texture and maybe another dark lichen?

A T-shaped branch intersection (no more than finger diameter, probably less) with the arms of the T starting from lower left angling to upper right, the upright of the T angling to lower right. Just at the centre of the intersection, the twig is wrapped in a golden orange fine textured lichen.It is composed of flatter bits underneath and roundish tiny mounds on top-- kind of like little piles of red letils cooked till they are starting to fall apart. To each side on the bar of the T are equally tiny bits of silver foliose lichen. Backround is blurred warm grey woodland.

My not especially large, pinkish finger is held beside a dark twig, which is a little smaller in diameter, and with multiple spots of several kinds of very tiny lichens- the close-ups to come show patches no bigger than a (short) fingernail.

I love this stump. I've shared pictures of it before here, it's got different cool stuff growing on every side. Some lipstick #lichens, several kinds of #moss... it's just great. Five star stump.

Extra bonus picture of the sky overhead, a gorgeous day for a walk before the rain starts up.

A brilliantly green moss piles in short, tufted little mounds on top of a slowly decomposing stump. They look incredibly soft.

Lipstick lichens grow on the shady side of a stump, below the more sun-loving moss on the top side.

A brilliant blue sky sets the stage for several kinds of cloud formations and a bright sun shining down.

I took this photo last month at the summit of Little Haystack Mountain, White Mountains, New Hampshire. I had just spent five hours snowshoeing from the base of the mountain to this summit. The mountains seen off in the distance are ones I’ve also hiked in, including Mt Washington the one that is snow-covered and in line with the cairn.

A very pale bluish-white lichen growing between clumps of moss. The lichen takes the form of branched stalks, all over round lumps. No other structures are visible.

Beauty was abound when I snowshoed up a mountain earlier this week. While the views at the summit of nearby mountain peaks/valleys were beautiful, so were the small features at my feet. Check out the rime ice that formed on the boulders. This ice forms in windy fog and points into the wind as it is forming. #ice #mountains #lichen

Yesterday I posted some #moss pictures from my lunchtime walk; that's currently the most-boosted toot I've had on Mastodon!

So here's some more - same walk, different bits of #mosses, #lichens, and #frosty leaves. Enjoy.

Fuzzy mounds of half frozen mosses crown a grey stump.

Crystals of pale ice cling to and highlight the edges of a few pale leaves, silhouetted against the darker leaves below them.

Tube-like lichens, some sporting pale blooms, climb the side of an old stump. Tons of life in one little spot.

Shaggy, frozen mosses drape along the edge of a large stone, a few smaller ones in the background sport similar fronds.

I took these photographs - of lichens and fissures on coastal rocks - intending to use them as inspiration for compositions in abstract acrylic paintings but when I put them together as a small collection I really liked them.

Found this apparently completely dried piece of lichen on a rock, scattered by black bears when foraging.
I took it home, watered it all over, and put it in a small cup.
The second photo, taken 24 hours after watering, shows how quickly lichens and mosses recover after a rain.
