I think one of the reasons why #Bluesky appeals more than #Mastodon, is that I find ppl here mostly favourite/like toots/posts rather than #boost them for visibility, so that leaves a lot of birdchan migrants wanting to know 'where is everyone'. I toot, tag, & yet the #engagement I get are mostly likes/favs, with the odd boost here or there. So you can bray all you want for #newbies to follow tags & accounts, but if you're not boosting others' toots, they're gonna go elsewhere for engagement.
REMEMBER
You can MUTE people who post things that disturb you. It doesn't unfollow them, but it might help you to get by your most sensitive times.
Click on their name, and on my instance, there are three dots you click to find mute. If you click the options, you can chose whether to mute them for hours, days, or a month.
@Ruhrnalist
Following 100 people is usually enough to make a feed that moves well. There are no push notifications, so the speed of posting depends on those you follow.
My hint for #newbies to Mastodon is to start with a hashtag filled intro post so people can find you, then immediately post a few posts about your fave hobbies so like-minded people can find you.
Also assume comments are made in good faith. Welcome.
Also follow Mastodon specific hashtags like #Mastodon and #silentsunday .
The current Linux distros I recommend:
1) Ultramarine Linux (I suggest the KDE build).
Ideal for the Linux newbie, who is looking for that "out of the box" and "get up and go" setup. From 1st install, you already have your non-free drivers, firmware, media codecs, and repositories setup, along with an easy-to-use app store. Based on the development, Fedora.
2) Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop
Ideal for those who have a little more skill set and want to build up their Linux desktop. It may not include all the required goodies most people rely upon, but it is a solid base to build up from.
3) Alma Linux (spelled as one word, AlmaLinux).
If you're not looking for the latest bleeding edge software and stability is your primary goal, for example, for business and perhaps educational purposes, AlmaLinux is a good choice. Based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
4) Fedora KDE Atomic Desktop (also known as, Fedora Kinoite)
As an immutable Linux distribution, this is ideal for people not looking to maintain their own system regularly, but rather rely on automatic system updates along with automatic system recovery when needed. Primarily, you should rely on the app store (flatpak), but you can extend the distro and install RPM packages if necessarily.

As I posted a long time ago, #Mastodon is easy enough that...
"I set up this entire account without any help from my daughter."
I have since migrated without her help, too.
Welcome to all the recent #TwitterMigrants !
If you hear stories about #JohnMastodon, they're not real-- well, *maybe* not.
Just remember: There is no algorithm here for people who do not follow you to find you. The best way to have your toots seen is by following accounts you enjoy and using lots of hashtags (like these ).
Be sure to follow @feditips for more helpful #newbie information.
I see a lot of #beautiful and/or #interesting #photos in my local instance, but - unfortunately - without any #comment in the post nor an #alternative #description of the picture #ALT as explanation. Sad.

Delete, alas]
9. Follow MANY and follow the #hashtags (!!!) that interest you, as there is no algorithm.
10. Follow @feditips
11. Follow back after vetting of #posts and #bios.
12. Post interesting #toots.
13. Always reply to serious answers.
14. Boost posts of (avid) followers but generally generously #AAB--#AlwaysBeBoosting.
One suggestion I have for #newbies on #Mastodon - actually say something! It doesn't have to be ground breaking.
I am far more likely to follow someone who actually expresses an opinion or says something about themselves. I don't just want someone who boosts others and nothing else. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a boost as it tells me about you but not every toot!
Also have a #bio and/or #introduction even if it is a little cryptic.
Welcome #newbies! (I joined just a few weeks ago myself!) You can follow people on lots of different servers, not just your own!
Please refer to the documentation at https://docs.joinmastodon.org/ to learn lots of useful things.
All the servers will get quite overwhelmed with people asking “how do I x????” So reading the documentation will prevent overwhelming both people & computers.
Also make sure to follow @feditips for helpful information!
So it's been 1 week on Mastodon for me. Things I've learned so far:
Do an #introduction post, fill it with hashtags of interests.
Have something in your bio so people can read about you
Follow (& unfollow) liberally
#boost makes posts more visible to others, #favourite saves them to your favourites.
Use alt text on images
Use #bookmark to save threads you want to follow
#CW subjects like politics, sports or common triggers
Replying to yourself creates a #thread
