The pits, each about 3 feet long, 2 feet wide and 6 feet deep, would have been filled by vertical stakes, sharpened to a point, waiting to impale anyone who stumbled into them. They're pretty much unqiue to the Roman presence in Scotland and highlight how threatened the Romans felt on this far northern edge of their empire.

There are a huge number of historical sites within easy striking distance of Glasgow, ranging from neolithic tombs to the site of the last siege of a castle in Britain (Stirling Castle in 1746). However, these are amongst my favourites. They're lilia, which are packs of large defensive pits dug by the Romans in front of Rough Castle Fort on the Antonine Wall around AD 140.

Sharing this (justly) furious verse from Ewan Robertson's song of c. 1880s about the Highland Clearances, telling Patrick Sellar to burn in hell.

Sellar, a factor (property manager) for the aristocratic Sutherland family, oversaw the forced eviction of tenants to make way for sheep, which could make landowners more money.

#OTD messages for 4th and 6th January highlighted stations along whole rail line which were closed in 1965 and 1969. Mapping these with OpenStreetMap and Leaflet (and also adding the Peebles line closure in Feb 1962) shows the impact of these days in limiting accessibility of a swathe of places across the south of Scotland.

I don't normally think of Empire as a very serious or highbrow podcast, but I'm really grateful to this episode for alerting me to the fact that Fibonacci and Michael Scott not only worked together but appear to have been friends.

I confess I checked a second source before fully believing this, but Fibonacci dedicated Liber Abaci to Scott.
