This is Paul Youd, an 87 year old vegan ultra-runner that I had the honour of documenting his latest ultra-marathon adventure, 50km around the city of Bath!

You read that right, 87 years old, VEGAN and smashing ultras!

He was supported by @runningonplants and their team and everyone made it to the finish line, inspired by Paul and his story! Make sure to check out their wonderful organisation.

A film will be in the works of this adventure to watch at www.youtube.com/@kelpandfern in the coming weeks and you'll learn more about Paul and why he went vegan and how he got in to running later on in life.

Stories like this are supported by members and small donations from people like you and I am proud that Kelp and Fern is not sponsored or supported by brands which means that I can document stories exactly like this, which otherwise wouldn't happen.

Please consider supporting at ko-fi.com/kelpandfern on Patreon.com/kelpandfern or becoming a member on the Youtube channel.

For the introverts among us.

❝I think there are more people who like the sport because they’re alone, but we’re not the people who loudly tell everybody, ‘I LOVE THIS SPORT BECAUSE I’M ALONE. ALL THE TIME!’

The ultra effect; The night after an ultra I almost always don’t sleep super well. This night was no exception.

Here you see the Garmin status recordings (bonus info I have 95 hours recovery ❤️‍🩹 time in front of me, apparently).

To be fair I must say the sleep felt better than it was according to all this tech 😀

👏🏻100+ Road ish run | LNBK Ringkøbing Fjord Winter Edition 2025

7th of 34 finishers (40+ starters). Some were still out there 2h30m after I finished. I am home again - legs are busted. Proud with the result.

The finishers before me were very good 🤯 - kept up with most of them the first 30+ ish but had to fallback; the pace wasn’t sustainable for me. 10K before the finish line I passed 1 of them (gone cold).

2024 Running Wrap Up

Had the wildest running year (again 😆). Ran 8 ultra races. Including the 100K UTMB CCC with 6K EG. And my first 100M - Kullamannen by UTMB 🇸🇪. Also my first Backyard Ultra (17 🔄). And my first 12 hour race (~100K). All wonderful formats 🤩

Also renewed most PRs on all major distances. Most proud of my sub 90 min half marathon (🤯). Couldn’t do that today 😆

Thank you 🙏🏻 for this wonderful network. So fantastic to be part of 💚

Well that’s the last bit of running, walking, and/or run walking for 2024.

The 3129 miles is a new record beating my 3008 in 2016 and killing 2023’s 2279 miles. No racing and interestingly no runs over 22 miles.

At 684 hours and change, no wonder if feels like all I did was run, eat, sleep, and work 😆

Now what to do next? 🤔
Following some you makes me wonder if I can do better in 2025. 😳

✅ First trail ultramarathon

Definitely not my strongest run (a recently injured Achilles had me mostly “speed hiking”) but I was very happy to have finished the Kosci50 under the cutoff time.

I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to do the final 15km loop after the final checkpoint as it was 650m of climbing over 11km then 650m descent over 4km. I took it very slowly but was surprised I was able to run the last 1.5km.
