I was running in the desert south of Phoenix. I took a nasty spill but had the presence of mind not to lock my arms. So, I was badly scraped up but otherwise uninjured. Absolutely no one commented the scabs on my face and hands until I stopped at the Vietnamese grocery in Tucson. The old lady at the checkout took one look at me and said "what happened to you?" I told her I had tripped while running. She paused a bit then said "it's better to tell people you were boxing". 😂 #running

Evening run before we are back up in Edinburgh for a long day, oh joy

8.5k, all road, dry and quiet. But coming back along the Teviot, dumbo de dug decided that he would bring a souvenir. I frequently pause here and throw a stick a few times to wind him down, but this? At least he brought it back another k and it is on the 'to be chopped' for the stove pile....

I joined a running group at the track today and I may as well have been part of a walking group next to them.

I still got 4 miles in but I find the running clubs near me don’t have any casual runners. Just about everyone is intense and going minimum of 6-8 miles on easy days and training for 30-50 milers.

I miss my old running club that had a slower pace and I was actually one of the faster people. Well, at least I’m getting out there and trying to meet people.

Why is it so hard to make friends when you’re older?

Garmin quo vadis? A Garmin Connect+ premium subscription? Really?

Makes you look cheap and greedy - considering the price of your more advanced watches. Luckily I don’t need the features you are now hiding behind the pay wall. Maybe the Performance Dashboards would be nice to have. And considering that Garmin Connect basically never gets an update those dashboards could have been released for free. And a useless AI? Haven’t you learned from the really bad Strava AI?

Seems DC Rainmaker is not impressed either.

Is the #enshitification now also reaching Garmin?

Yesterday afternoons run

Having to be at the Western General for the day and with time to kill, the dug ad I took a little time to run along the seafront at Cramond, and doing so in the afternoon were able to get over the old E-boat defences to the island. A gorgeous afternoon and a linear run of 10.5k, path, beach and track. I rarely get over there but was delighted to see that drinking water stations are on the path (prompted by the Park Run?).

Looking for lifting program rec’s.

I’ve been #lifting the last couple years, mostly the basic moves, with steady progression, based on Rippetoe “Strength Training. But I’m curious about exploring a more formal program. I’m looking for something to compliment #running, but also to be more rounded athletically and retain mass as I look at breaking half a century.

I’m looking for other rec’s and experiences.
- Some people on a discord mentioned “Tactical Barbell”
- I like lifting for power and strength
- Zero interest in the typical “20 reps, low weight”
- Prefer a book
- 2-3 workouts/week, 45-115min ea
- Currently no mental capacity to roll my own

Morning run

We have had a glorious few days in the Borders and today has started off just as well. 12.5k road and tracks, followed by a swim (for the dug) - it’s ether that or the hose before my partner will let him back into the cottage, and he prefers the swim.

This commemorates Peter Greif, winner of the 1984 #marathon for Fat People in 2:33hr, organized by Manfred Steffny. He is the older brother of Herbert Steffny, who won Bronze at the 1984 NYC Marathon.
Peter Greif was one of the best marathon trainers and his training plans are still used today. Unfortunately, everything is in German.
If the sub 3hr are in you then a trainer like Peter Greif would squeeze it out. #running #RunnersOfMastodon

My Altra #running shoes’ sidewall ripped with plenty of tread left, after nonstop tread peeling on previous shoes. Quality and design went to shit after founder sold to a conglomerate. Trying out Topo next.

I dumped my coach in November, mostly for financial reasons, but also due to the fact that he's anti-data and anti-tech. He's very much a pro-RPE acolyte. It doesn't vibe with my math and data analysis brain.

I'm #running the Chicago Marathon this October and will be following a power-based training plan by Steve Palladino. His plan includes V̇O₂ max workouts, supra-threshold, sub-threshold, HMP, MP, and lots of easy running.

I'm curious to see how my RSB falls out.

Here is my running stress balance while coached. This is found by scoring each run with a stress score, finding a rolling 7-day average ("fatigue"), a rolling 42-day average ("fitness"), and calculating "fatigue minus fitness".

Notice the time spent in the Maintenance band of training versus the time in Productive.

This is frustrating, because hiring a coach is expensive. I want to see progress, but it didn't happen, and I now know why.

From Dec 1, 2022 to Dec 1, 2024 I was coached for attempting a sub-3 hour marathon. My PR up to that point was 3:21:31. However, the best my coach could get out of me during this time was 3:12:09.

As the training was progressing, I was skeptical that he was pushing me as hard as he could. Many of the workouts, while challenging, were achievable.

I tried suggesting adjustments, such as V̇O₂ max workouts and running doubles, but they fell on deaf ears.
