🟥Today, staff at the #University of #Groningen #strike against the proposed budget cuts to #HigherEducation in the #Netherlands. This is part of a national relay strike supported by the labour unions AOb and FNV.

The cut-backs also affect academic libraries, like 'my' University of Groningen #Library @Bibliothecaris. That is why I, together with other library colleagues, join the strike.

On Tuesday I had the privilege of speaking at Oxford’s EDI Roundtable on #Neurodiversity. It’s inspiring to see the university breaking down barriers so neurodivergent students and staff feel they belong and thrive. More than 140 attendees joined thought-provoking discussions on policy, experience and inclusion. Fantastic to see this momentum continue! Huge thanks to all involved. But on top of all this, there is an issue that is dear to me: higher education.

Higher education used to be a source of pride for me as an Ontarian and a professor at one of Ontario's public universities. With an excellent system of universities, and two world-class institutions, UofT and McMaster, higher education has long been an example of the best Ontario has to offer to the world. Not so much anymore.

The coming wave of AI-driven automation in UK higher education

What could go wrong? 👀 just registered for this event in January

This free online event from Wonkhe and Salesforce will explore how AI powered technology can make a tangible impact. We’ll also take a deeper look into the concept of autonomous agents – AI driven tools that can handle complex tasks autonomously. From enabling more personalised interactions with potential applications to automating routine tasks and streamlining communications, we’ll explore how AI can enable different kinds of connections with applicants as well as creating additional capacity for staff to handle other priorities.

Student admissions and recruitment staff, like many in universities, are juggling competing pressures on their time. Rising competition, an increased focus on international student recruitment as well as budget constraints making working efficiently more important than ever – all while putting extra pressure on those managing admissions. At the same time, students expect more individualised and responsive engagement with their prospective institutions.

Tomorrow, the House of Representatives of the Netherlands will vote on the proposed budget, which includes dramatic budget cuts to higher education.

Today is the last opportunity for us to make our voices heard before tomorrow's vote. There will be protests throughout the country.

At Delft University of Technology, we will gather at 1pm in front of the Aula for a walk-out.
