The nyckelharpa is a folk instrument from Sweden with a long standing tradition there. "Nyckelharpa" is a Swedish word, "nyckel" meaning "key" and "harpa" being a general term for a stringed instrument. Its key features (hah, see what I did there?) are the sympathetic strings and a keybox full of wooden keys. Some translate it into English to "keyed fiddle"
"viola de teclas" in Spanish or "viola d'amore a chiavi" in Italian - although it is not a fiddle or viola ;)
How it works: I produce the sound with a bow on the strings, like on any other bowed instrument, but instead of touching the strings with the fingers of my left hand and pushing them down on a fretboard or fingerboard to play a melody, I press a key. The key moves a little wooden tangent to the string and tada, the note changes The magical sound of the nyckelharpa is created from its sympathetic strings (usually 12) which are enhancing every note I play on the four melody strings.
If you want to hear some nyckelharpa music, you're welcome on my duos bandcamp https://aklejafolk.bandcamp.com or search for "Akleja" wherever you like to stream music. More names you can look for there are Josefina Paulson, Hazelius Hedin, Emilia Amper, Väsen, Daniel Pettersson / Sotali, Erik Rydvall - there are so many FANTASTIC players out there!
The instrument pictured here was made by Mats Wester.
Thanks to you and all the commenters sharing stories of their experiences: it’s important to recognize the harm done enforcing right preference in children.
My connection to this is tricky, because I teach violin and viola to youngsters, and consistently get the expected percentage of little lefties in my studio, except that the violin is a remarkably asymmetrical instrument…

May the artwork take you to an enchanted place of joy, music, light, and happiness.
I'm not sure why this sad little tune, so different from my usual stuff, came into my head:
Here's a waltz in memory of my grandmother, an immigrant to Toronto who raised six children during the Depression, meanwhile working in the garment industry after her husband became disabled.
Being a good parent means giving your 10yo your full attention while she plays Ode to Joy on the violin for you.
Being a GREAT parent is immediately yelling "play Ja Ja Ding Dong!" when she finishes.

For #TuneTuesday here's a flowery polka:
"What sometimes gets forgotten amid the myriad horrors of the #Shoah (Hebrew for #Holocaust) is the systematic obliteration of entire cultures. #Shtetls (#Yiddish for 'small towns') with predominantly, or entirely, #Jewish populations were scattered across the east. In a world in which pogroms might flare up and result in massacres, these communities provided relative security out of which all kinds of cultural expression might flourish. Core to them was often a rich #musical life, with the #violin at its core. This playlist seeks to commemorate that heritage."

[#Introduction]
I finally got around around to re-writing my badly outdated intro after a full year
Hi Fediiiii I'm Octavia, a trans-fem Japanese and USian bard, violinist, streamer, and vtuber who uses her classical training to play all of the wonderful soundtracks that exist in the world
Games, anime, movies, visual novels, and any other sort of soundtrack I can get my hands on are in my repertoire I stream on Youtube and Twitch and spend the time introducing people to soundtracks and taking soundtrack requests
Over the last 1.5 years, I've also dealt with long covid, which makes my stamina 20% of what it used to be, alongside making everything cost more and recover slower, which has been a frustrating journey, and I've become nearly unable to do in-person performances because even the travel is exhausting I'm also AuDHD, and always have the specter of repetitive stress injuries looking over my shoulders
On Fedi, I tend to talk about games, manga, trans-fem stuff, and streaming, as well as heavier topics like transphobia, transmisogyny, and racism (my boosts tend to be slightly wider in topics, including appropriately CW'd lewd material and artists (and if you want just my posts, you can set the option to not see my boosts~))

The first video in *checks notes* oh...oh dear...2 months?
Today's piece is the main theme from Lupin III, a beloved yet often underappreciated anime series that started back in the 1970s, going on to get classics like The Castle of Cagliostro directed by Miyazaki Hayao himself
[Lupin III - Main Theme]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8UadYM1SpI
Even in the last decade, the series has been alive and well, getting both full anime series and movies
My favourites by far, though, are The Castle of Cagliostro, First Contact, and Lupin III vs Detective Conan (I'm really fond of the interactions between Fujiko and Conan )
