In a world in which pogroms might flare up and result in massacres, these communities provided relative security out of which all kinds of cultural expression might flourish. Erez Zobary spent a long time downplaying her #Jewish identity in her #music career. Her earlier work—a blend of R&B, pop, soul and jazz—dealt with issues relevant to her audience of largely twentysomethings: love lives, quarter-life crises, feeling stuck and aimless. It may not be surprising, then, that a woman whose songs so often looked inward would eventually turn to her heritage. As she tells Culturally Jewish, The CJN’s arts and culture podcast, her #songs began feeling increasingly disconnected from who she really was, and she wanted to try something drastically different.

The result is Erez, her new #album, which dives deep into her #Yemenite family history—specifically her grandmother’s escape from #Yemen to #Israel as part of #OperationMagicCarpet. Zobary joins the show to explain her process and backstory, and to share how she feels releasing an album with #MiddleEastern #musical flourishes, covered in #Hebrew writing, just one year after #Oct7.

The original Broadway cast of "Hadestown" -- Reeve Carney, Eva Noblezada, André De Shields, Amber Gray and Patrick Page -- will reunite for a limited West End run from February 11 - March 9 at at London’s Lyric Theatre. An unconfirmed rumor claims the reunion is to be live captured.

Black Beauty is one of my new toys. I usually save most of my pocket money for camera gear but I have wanted to upgrade to a hollow body electric guitar for a long time.
I stopped in at a music store recently and saw this beautiful Peavey JF-1 on sale. I picked it up and lightly strummed her for a short time. I ended up leaving the store with her.

Black Beauty This is an image of an electric guitar. To be exact, this is a picture of a black Peavey JF-1. The image was taken with the head stock forward looking down the neck. The guitar is a glossy black with white trim and gold plated tuning pegs. The neck leads your eyes down towards the body of the guitar. You can see the volume and tone knobs on the left and the pickup selector switch on the right. The gold plated bridge lies top center of the image.
