Talking with the folks in the local #vintage / #retrocomputing community, they clued me in that the #ThinkPad #RAID is a steaming pile of and not worth the trouble.

So I swapped out the two testing #NVMe drives I was using and reinstalled the original sticks - to have #windoz10 demanding for the #bitlocker recovery key.

Well, time to wipe & install #windoz11 then.

Install went fine, only 4 rando #drivers to find for all #devices to be recognized and working.

Using my #CTT scripts to install the majority of applications, then to remove the #spyware #bloatware and other garbage #micro$oft added to #windows11

Then migrate my #data from my other ThinkPad. Welcome to my #sunday #funday

The collection goes from the mid-’90s to 2017 and allows you to see the company’s design process and concept art for never-realized ideas like the “Cricket Collection” that could be worn behind the ear, tied around the ankles, or clipped to glasses.

I did some research online; most are telling to boot into safe mode but M$ removed the capability. So, I am a little lost on where to go next in getting Win10 or Win11 running on this.

Though this has a 64-bit processor, let me try the Win10 x86 32-bit LTSP installer from 2019: and it worked! The install went fine, but it ran dog slow. I used the native browser to download and then upgraded the #BIOS to the latest for the W510 and everything was noticeably slow. Unfortunately, most of the tools I want to use are 64-bit so this version of Win10 is not really an option.
To test & try to troubleshoot, I installed the latest version of #Debian #Linux. The install went fine, and the user experience was much better than the 32-bit Win10 – no real noticeable slowness. Ok, Linux is an option – but not what I had planned for this laptop. Let me wipe the drive (getting rid of #GRUB) and retry installing Win11 or Win10 LTSP.
Now when I boot with either Win11 or Win10 LTSP #USBs the windows logo flashes and the dreaded black screen with blinking cursor appears. We don’t even get the option to install…. (Ugh!)
Currently I booted into #ShredOS and am wiping the drive as a load test.

The one issue I was able to figure out with this #lenovo #T430s was printing on #windoz11

With my #HP #laserjet using #jetdirect cards with an local #IP address have worked fine over the years (and the cheap toner cartridges make it all the better)

But when installing 11, adding and using printers over the #network is nothing but frustration. The #printer would not add/configured, or if it did get added then test prints would sit in the print queue and fail. I could ping the printer, but there was no visible communication with it.

Searching at length, I fumbled across this post

Windows 11 22H2: network printing switched to RPC over TCP

So Microsoft changed the default print related communications for endpoints in #Windows 11 version #22H2 Endpoints now use #RPC over #TCP instead of over Named Pipes.

If you are in this situation, there are some registry edits that can be made manually via #powershell or via #grouppolicy that are documented in that linked article.

I made the edits on the #T430s and am now able to print to my #4050TN Now, for some reason my #ThinkPadP1 is still having issues with printing after the #registry tweaks, with test jobs still sticking in the queue. More #troubleshooting is needed, or I may just #wipe & #reinstall

Which is a shame, since this T430s runs both 10 and 11 really well with the max #16GB of #RAM - it boots up in seconds with a #1TB #ssd I installed. The #keyboard has a nice feel to it (even with the chicklet keys), and is wide enough but not a surfboard wide. The #USB3 and the #expresscard ports let me use this for tech projects as well as the browsing and job hunting I am currently focused on.

I lost count the number of negative nancy's in these threads with the answer to throw it out / upgrade to something new - the hardware is over 10 years old, yadda yadda. Clearly they are not familiar with us #vintagecomputing folks, nor familiar with using an item until it completely falls apart.

The battery replacement went well, the #spicypillows are removed, and am working on my #macPro again.

The bottom plate is definitely warped.

The directions that came with the replacement battery was way more involved than it needed to me; having me remove the motherboard and everything. Yea, sure you could go that path but there is a less invasive approach (and less risk of damaging parts or connectors with my sausage fingers).

Up and working again - and in line for getting #OCLP configured on this mid-2015 #macbook_pro
